2. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS (PHASE II)

In the field of environmental consulting we and our clients are concerned with the extent, identities and concentrations of man-made contaminants in soils, sediments, porous rock layers, surface waters and groundwater. The nature of their movement in the subsurface environment is governed to a great extent by the three-dimensional geometry of the impermeable geologic boundaries and the porous geologic materials through which they travel.

Since most cities and industries develop on relatively flat plains, lowlands or valleys, and broad basins or coastal areas, much of our work deals with the groundwater which in these areas is generally located within soft sediment layers deposited by rivers, lakes, glaciers, volcanic flows or landslides. Occasionally the critical groundwater aquifer is situated within the much older underlying hard rock layers or within or adjacent to sometimes irregularly-shaped volcanic and igneous bodies. The thickness, extent and geologic composition of these soft sediment deposits quite commonly vary over relatively short distance on the order of hundreds of feet, a few tens of feet or even less.

SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION METHODS

Aerotech’s investigations are conducted in accordance with standard practices as defined by ASTM E1903-97 (Environmental Site Assessments: Phase II Environmental Site Assessment Process). While geologic maps and surface features provide some insight into the nature of the geologic materials, structures and faults beneath our feet, a reliable ‘picture’ of the subsurface and of the extent of contaminated soils and groundwater generally requires the advancement of soil borings and the construction of monitoring wells on a subject property. Small to medium sized drilling rigs and hollow stem augers are generally utilized for this purpose.

The data acquired during the subsurface investigation is used to define subsurface detail at the scale of the subject property and of the contaminant area or 'plume.' The data - including laboratory analysis of soils or ground water - acquired during these field operations can permit us to determine with considerable precision the nature of the geologic units beneath or near the property, the depth of geologic units, the depth of the groundwater table, the direction of groundwater flow, and the amount (concentration) and type of chemical contamination present at the site.

Other less invasive exploratory methods such as ground penetrating radar and electrical resistivity surveys may also reveal the details of geologic structures and the extent of the contaminant 'plume' at or near the subject property in the areas between and beyond soil borings and wells. Seismic surveys - employing the artificial generation of ground vibration - may also be utilized to 'see' the geologic strata and structures.
